Berkeley Police Department Jail Facility
The Berkeley Police Department’s jail facility is located inside the Hall of Justice. It is staffed by one Sergeant and 15 Community Service Officers. It falls under the Support Service Division.
The jail will hold over 40 prisoners and is used for incarceration between arrest and arraignment, normally the next business day, or pending court holidays.
The jail facility has 16 male and 4 female cells, as well as two Detoxification Cells and two Safety Cells, lined with padding. Prisoners are provided three meals each day. For information on incarcerated persons, including charges and bail amounts, call 510-981-5766.
The following information concerns jail visitations, bail and records:
VISITATION
Visiting is allowed between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Holidays; or between 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. during your second calendar weekday in custody. Visitors must be 18 years or older and have a valid identification.
BAIL / O. R. PROGRAM
A prisoner has a right to be released on bail unless arrested for murder, treason, or suspicion thereof, unless arrested on a Warrant or Detainer which specifies No Bail.
If the prisoner does not wish to post bail, or desires a bail reduction, they are allowed to complete a pre-trial release from custody prior to appearing in court. Berkeley no longer offers an Own Recognizance (O.R.) program. A person who wishes to reduce their bail or be released on O.R. must arrange that after they have been transported to the Oakland Courthouse.
There is no longer a Berkeley/Albany Municipal Courthouse in the City Of Berkeley. Court call is at 9:00 am and 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (except court holidays), at the Oakland Superior Court, 661 Washington, Oakland.
RECORDS
Information concerning a prisoner intake in the jail facility, including booking, medical information and property records, will remain on file for at least 3 years.
Property left unclaimed in the jail facility for more than 90 days is subject to destruction according to current law.
